How to Create and Run a Q&A?

A Q&A in Pigeonhole Live lets participants submit questions, vote on questions from others, and engage with speakers during or beyond a presentation or event. You can create a Q&A in an Event Pigeonhole or a Presentation Pigeonhole, depending on how you want to collect and manage audience questions.

1. Create a Q&A

For an Event Pigeonhole

  1. In your Event Pigeonhole, add a new session and select Q&A as the session type.
  2. Set the session start and end times according to your event agenda. If you want to collect questions in advance, set the start time to when you want submissions to open. The start and end dates are constrained by the Pigeonhole Duration.
  3. Configure the Q&A settings to suit your session, such as anonymity, question filtering, voting, and tags.
  4. Save your changes.

Note: Once a session starts, you cannot change its start time.

For a Presentation Pigeonhole

  1. Open your Presentation Pigeonhole.
  2. Add a new interactivity and select Q&A.
  3. Configure the Q&A settings according to your needs.
  4. Save your changes.

A Q&A in a Presentation Pigeonhole is pinned by default, allowing participants to access it and submit questions throughout the presentation.

2. Configure your Q&A settings

Before opening your Q&A to participants, review the settings available for managing questions and audience participation.

  • Anonymous responses: When disabled (default), participants are asked to create a profile when submitting answers. The speaker or presenter can identify participants who submitted answers. When enabled, participants are not identified in the answers they post in the Audience Web App, Panels, and Insights.
  • Question Filtering: When enabled, you can allow or dismiss participant questions before they appear on the Audience Web App and Projector Panel, giving you more control over the content shown.
  • Comments: Enables respondents to comment on questions. Comments do not appear on the Projector Panel by default, but can be accessed.
    • Comment filtering: Enables an admin to manage audience comments by choosing to Allow, Edit, or Dismiss them. Only allowed comments are visible to your audience. You can enable or disable this comment filtering feature at any time, even while the Interactivity is live.
  • Answers: This feature allows you to provide text answers to questions in the Q&A that you were not able to address while it was live. Your audience can return to the same URL to view the Admin-approved answers.
  • Answer Ratings: When a question is marked as answered, participants can privately rate the answer. The answer ratings are not visible to the audience and can be seen only in the PDF and Excel reports.
  • Attendees can view Q&A questions even after it has ended: When enabled, attendees can continue to view the Q&A beyond the end time, but will not be able to submit new answers. This setting is only available for Event Pigeonholes.
  • New question alert on the Presentation Display: When a new Q&A question is submitted, it displays on the Projector Panel (or Q&A slide for a Presentation Interactivity) as a notification with the “New” indicator. When question filtering is enabled, an Admin must approve the question before it displays.
  • Collaborate on questions on the Admin Panel: Allows Admin Panel users to assign questions to each other.
  • Reactions: Allows participants to use emojis to react to moments in your live events, live streams, and on-demand videos.
  • Question votes: Adds a vote button to the Audience Web App. Participants can vote on submitted questions, including their own. This setting is always on by default.
  • Participants/Attendees can only view their own submitted questions: Enables a participant to filter for questions they submitted non-anonymously in the Audience Web App. Participants will not be able to see questions from other participants in the Audience Web App.
  • Display questions by: You can display questions in the Audience Web App in these orders:
    • Top Tally: The total number of votes.
    • Latest: The order in which they were posted.
The audience can also adjust the display in the Audience Web App.
  • Tags: Topics that participants can assign to their questions. Consider setting up tags to organise Q&A questions. Type the text in the field, then enter a comma.
    • Require tags for every question submitted: When enabled, participants must select at least one tag before they can post their question. This ensures every submission is automatically sorted for your moderators and speakers.

Available settings may differ depending on your Pigeonhole type and plan.

3. Run your Q&A

Once your Q&A is ready, participants can access it through the Audience Web App to submit and vote on questions.

During the session, hosts and moderators can review incoming questions, use votes to identify popular topics, and select questions for speakers to address. If question filtering is enabled, questions must be approved before they appear to the audience.

You can also display questions on the Projector Panel to bring them into the live discussion, and star them to highlight the question being discussed.

4. Continue the conversation after the session

A Q&A does not have to end with the live discussion. Admins can provide text answers to questions that were not addressed during the session, allowing participants to return to the same URL to view approved answers.

For Event Pigeonholes, you can also enable the setting that allows attendees to continue viewing questions after the session ends. They will not be able to submit new questions.
